Changing a Kerberos 5 Password

Passwords at the RCF

Choosing a Password

Changing an AFS Password

Changing an SMB Password

The following is the recommended procedure that users should use to change their Kerberos 5 password on the RCF Unix cluster.

  • First, choose a password that satisfies the restrictions on passwords at the RCF.
  • Next, login to an RCF Ssh Gateway system.
  • Finally, change your password using the passwd command (/usr/bin/passwd).

Note that the passwd command will reject weak passwords.

Users with more indepth knowledge of Kerberos will recognize that kpasswd is the "normal" password changing program for Kerberos 5. Unfortunately, due to a name conflict with the AFS kpasswd program and the need to provide AFS client binaries for foreign AFS Cells, we have chosen to use the native passwd program on UNIX systems in combination with PAM to take the place of the native Kerberos 5 kpasswd program.
